Being an immigrant myself, who only recently became naturalized, I strongly believe that immigration reform is a necessity for this country. Not only because of the precarious state of our outdated set of immigration laws, or the overwhelming amount of undocumented aliens currently living in the shadows, but because of our commitment to honor and embrace our own immigrant history. This is the reason why I chose this subject for my English class project at the University of Maryland.
Nevertheless, immigration reform is much more than just a positive and progressive agenda with evident intrinsic human values. Indeed, the need for immigration reform has direct connections with our current weakened economy that threads the sustainability of our social programs. In this website, I explore the benefits and drawbacks of implementing immigration reform as well as the different aspects of this monumental task. |
My goal is to demonstrate that a well-executed immigration reform would not only be a positive and humane measure, but it would also generate significant socio-economic contributions to the US economy. Other factors considered include high-skilled and low-skilled immigrants’ impact in the US job market and welfare system and the favorable outcomes of immigrants’ fertility rates. Further, my intention is to forward concepts related to adjustments to the current immigration reform bill that may be necessary in order to secure immigrants’ and their families’ psychological well-being.
